In My Little Town

This past spring, the painful decision was made to close five elementary schools due to declining enrollment. In June it was difficult to read about final farewells to places that were so important to thousands of children, parents and educators over the decades.

This September was to be the first time these schools wouldn't be used.

Until now.

The city has decided to send several buses to Louisiana. On the way down, they will carry supplies and cash. On the way back, they'll carry survivors. Some might call them refugees, but we'll be calling them neighbors -- for as long as necessary.

And those five elementary schools will be pressed into service once again, offering shelter to those who have none. And Tunaville will have to opportunity to offer hope and the comfort of a caring community to some of those in need.

Tonight I'm very proud of my little town.

And I'm so very grateful to be moving home to Tunaville. Go Tunas!

Wow! I am so impressed. I just wonder why we don't hear about this kind of grass roots helping hand on our networks.

It's nice to hear some good news in the face of all the sadness.
