A SHORT QUIZ

This was the routine.

Nearly every weekend three women would get together to watch a little TV, drink a little wine, solve the world's problems, and sew. It was affectionately known as "Stitch and Bitch" -- or just "S&B" around polite company. If you took a photograph each week, it would seem as if we never moved. Each had an unspoken assigned place to sit: two on the couch, one in the rocker. Each had their own light, and on colder evenings, their own blanket.

The conversations varied from work to friends to life problems to television shows. One evening, someone proposed the following question:

If you could be remembered for only one thing, what would it be?

The first answered, "to be pretty." The second answered, "To be smart." The third talked around the question and never really answered it one way or another, because those questions were hard. Those "pick one" kind of questions. The best, the worst, the favorite. Picking one meant excluding all the other possibilities, and surely there were times when something else was the best, the worst or the favorite. "Pick one" could only happen with several disclaimers, which usually negated the whole point of "pick one."

Today Mensch spreads her wings and flies to points south. The adjustment will be hard, for both TinyTuna and me. We'll have to find a way to fill a big void -- most likely with emails, letters and phone calls. Goodbyes weren't really said, because I'm sure I'll talk to her tonight. And probably tomorrow night as well.

I would however, like to answer the question I never answered. If I could be remembered for only one thing, I would like to be remembered as being a good friend. I may not have always lived up to the title, but I would hope as people come in and eventually out of my life, they remember me kindly and know that there was and will always be a place in my heart, as well as on my couch.
